Full Moon features two musicians: Steve Heckman on saxes, flutes & clarinet and, Heikki Koskinen, on keyboards & tenor recorder. Many of these tracks were created spontaneously in the studio, while exploring fresh approaches to these traditional songs.
Many of these tunes bring out distinct memories of places and feelings for me. The oldest song here, The Kalevala Melody, from the Finnish national epic, Kalevala, is known to every Finn. On it Steve and I become two modern day “runo” singers. Full Moon is a prototypical Finnish tango that I’ve danced to many times in small rural dance halls. Eventide, by Toivo Kuula, is an evocative classical vocal piece, which I have sung in a school choir. “French Heels” & “I Could Tell You A Secret” bring memories of 50’s radio shows I usd to listen to.
My musical associations with Steve began right after we moved to the San Francisco Bay Area – many, many moons ago. The respect we have for each other’s music has grown into a mutual friendship through the years.
