Heikki "Mike" Koskinen is a recording artist, composer, and educator currently living in San Francisco. Chosen by critics in "Rytmi" magazine polls as Finland’s top jazz trumpet player in the 1970’s, he left his native Finland to study jazz at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston. Koskinen is the recipient of several Finnish composing grants, recorded several albums, and won awards as an innovative children’s music teacher. He served as coordinator and host of the Bay Area radio program "Studio Finland" for ten years. His Bay Area groups, with Heikki on trumpet and piano, have featured such musicians as Hadley Caliman, Steve Heckman, Mark Levine, Joe Bonner, Benny Green, Larry Hancock and Michael Spiro. Koskinen’s main instruments these days are piano, the Morrison Digital Trumpet, and the tenor recorder. In addition to performing and teaching music in the Bay Area, he writes, arranges, and produces music for media and live groups.

"STUDIO FINLAND TRIO" - my latest band project

Duo CD "TÄYSIKUU / FULL MOON" with Steve Heckman soon to be released

Quotes

A Jazz star from Finland, trumpeter Mike (Heikki) Koskinen,… played a most impressive set at Bajone’s… melodic ballads, strong-rhythmed bop standards and touches of funky stuff too.

And what a glorious tone and firm command of his horn.

~Philip Elwood, San Francisco Examiner

The rhythm section was quite fabulous. Koskinen's relaxed and easygoing authority seemed to conjure up a creative atmosphere that drove the whole band.
~Jukka Hauru, Helsingin Sanomat, Helsinki
